‘Why’ is one of the most important words for a manager. Use it and it will help you with everything from building trust to developing the team.
Here’s why:
When you’ve made a decision, you explain why you came to that conclusion; it builds transparency and helps the team learn how you go about making a call
When something goes well or perhaps not as you planned, you look at why; you learn what you could do better or take to the next situation.
If a team member’s performance level drops you ask yourself and them why; your curiosity helps the team member feel seen and heard and you both get the opportunity to learn.
