Want to get ready to do your best? Imagine it

A situation that used to make me feel nervous was doing something unknown. Presenting to a group of people I haven’t met before, or going to a job interview where I didn’t know what to expect.

But then I started to realise how visualisation could help. It's something that lots of hugely successful athletes like the swimmer Michael Phelps use. They create a picture in their mind of what the race or event will look like. They picture themselves right there in the moment. Most importantly what performing well will look and feel like.

Here are three simple steps you can use yourself at work to help get you ready for that difficult moment that you want to bring your best to.

  1. Have a think about the upcoming situation you have. Think about the scene, who is there, how are they looking, how is the room laid out. Put yourself right there – get familiar with it.

  1. How do you think you are feeling? What do you think will be going through your mind? This will help you be ready for yourself.

  1. Imagine yourself in the situation performing well – what does that look like? How do you look? What are you feeling?

These are simple things to do, but I’ve found they really help me to be more familiar with the situation I’ll be walking into and how I will be feeling when I’m there. This familiarity helps me get ready to bring my best to a situation that used to make me feel a bit nervous
