A friend’s advice not enough?

Ever wonder why your friends don’t take your brilliant advice about how to solve a problem at work, but go off and do something completely different? It’s because people don’t want to be told what to do, they want to figure it out for themselves.

Most of the time you can work out what you need to do if you hit a roadblock at work. Maybe you talk to people you trust and this helps you find a way forward or maybe you reach for a solution that’s worked for you in the past. Sometimes though you can get stuck with an issue at work that you can’t seem to resolve using your tried and tested methods. This is when coaching can help.

A coach will help you figure things out for yourself. Coaching isn’t about giving advice or telling people what to do, it’s about helping people develop their thinking skills so they can find their own solutions. For example, if you were an athlete and felt with the right help your performances could improve you might consider talking to a sports coach. Right? This is because you trust that a sports coach understands how your body works and can help motivate you to improve. If something in your work life isn’t going well and you feel stuck, working with a coach to change or develop the way you think about things can help you figure out what to do.

Sounds easy but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Coaching is about having positive future focused conversations that motivate you to develop your thinking skills. Sometimes long held beliefs or attitudes may need to be re-evaluated or discarded to open up new possibilities. Coaching is the opposite of doing the same thing in the same way and getting the same result. It’s about thinking differently and doing things differently so you get a different result.
